Opportunities From: Star of Hope Mission

During hurricane season from June to November, people living on the streets face an elevated risk of displacement and unsafe conditions.  We’d really appreciate your help assembling “hurricane kits” to enhance their disaster preparedness. 

For this project, we recommend that volunteers place the following items in a plastic container or large Ziploc: We ask that all the bags be consistent in contents. colors can vary, but we ask that the bags have the same items as not to make anyone feel left out if they do not get a certain item.

Flashlights plus compatible batteries (no candles, please!) Hand-cranked radios Backup lighting batteries Ziploc plastic bags for important documents Toilet paper First aid kit Face masks (disposable, as there may not be electricity/water to wash cloth ones) Gloves (2 pair for each kit; non latex) (2)Green Glow Sticks

Granola/high protein bars Pop top fruit containers (fruit cocktail, peaches) in light juice Plastic spoon Cheese and crackers/peanut butter and crackers Pretzels packs (not chips--pretzels are more filling) Potted meat/vienna sausages Starkist Tuna Kits Bottled Water

Many of our men arrive to our facility just with the clothes on their backs and are in need of the same hygiene and toiletry items we use daily. Gather friends and family to assemble Men's Welcome Bags and give hope. Thank you!    Major Responsibilities: In a gallon Ziploc bag or gift bag place the following items
-Deodorant
Toothpaste/Toothbrush Lotion (Full Size) Shampoo (Full Size) Face towels Floss Socks Chapstick You might even want to include a scripture card or Note of Encouragement!

Sack lunches are an everyday need for residents who are out job searching, at social service appointments or just arrived at our shelter. Sack lunches consist of a sandwich (condiments on the side) & a few sides such as chips, snack bars, fruit, dessert.  We also ask that you provide water bottles to be distributed with the lunch. This is an offsite project. Please read drop off instructions below.

Women & Family Development Center at Star of Hope’s - Cornerstone Community® - 2575 Reed Rd., Houston, TX 77051  – (Please see the attached a map of this campus & go to the "Building E" or "Building A" near the front of Cornerstone.  There should be signs & arrows for the donation drop-offs.)

During their stay at Star of Hope our residents attend programmatic classes daily and need supplies to be successful in accomplishing their educational and career goals. Gather friends and family and assemble program supply kits for our adult residents. You can collect the items by hosting a drive or purchasing them.

Major Responsibilities:

Collect and assemble 30 Program Supply Kits

In a transparent binder pen/pencil pouch, place the following items:

· 2 Pencils

· 2 Pens black or blue

· 2 Highlighters yellow

· 12" Plastic Ruler

· Pink Eraser

· Transparent or Mesh Binder Pen/Pencil Pouch

Also add:

· 2" 3-ring Binder any color

· 50/100 sheets of loose-leaf paper

Make it a special day with Notes of Encouragement! We all love cards & special greetings. However, our clients/residents usually do not receive mail that is positive & uplifting. Your notes will be placed in the clients/resident's mailboxes or bed to bless, uplift & raise the self-esteem of those who are homeless.

Moving into a new home is very exciting and a dream come true for many of our residents. Many things are needed to make that place feel like home and that's where you come in. Gather friends and family to assemble housewarming baskets for our residents leaving Star of Hope into their new home.

Major Responsibilities:

Select and purchase items for one of the following Housewarming Gift Basket to assemble for our residents who have achieved independent living:

Kitchen Cleaning Supplies Bedding/Linens Kitchen Utensils Kitchenware General Supplies

Place items in a laundry basket, plastic container or box. Each basket should contain from 6-9 items. Sample lists are available. Include a WELCOME HOME note to bless our residents.

Hosting a donation drive is a wonderful way to create community awareness and participation in our mission while meeting the very real needs of those less fortunate. The best part about this opportunity is that it is done at your convenience and your location. The most successful donation drives focus on only one or two items.
